After having conducted several needs assessments (notably on unsafe child migration), our team elected to start its activities in the area of Arba Minch, Gamo zone of Ethiopia's SNNP Region, at the very heart of Africa's famous Rift Valley, which is the craddle of humanity. Although the place has a huge potential for many sustainable industries (handicrafts from local production materials, ecotourism to wonderful cultural and natural sites, etc.), it still faces incredible hardships, in addition to being known in the whole country for child labour and trafficking – particularly the Gamo zone highland areas, which are typical (forced) migration 'hotspots': some HTPs like girls married by abduction and inherited marriage are indeed among the highest in the country; malnutrition also regularly affects children in many areas, as does school dropout. Also and in spite of its likely statute of 'future capital' city of the South, Arba Minch is still lagging behind similar towns of Ethiopia, e.g. Hawassa or Bahir Dar, which benefited from strong investments in the past decade, in terms or numerous services (such as the assistance to female victims of violence and street-connected children).
